1 Level Limited is a company that was created initially just to build quality small developments, exclusively of new build bungalows due to the lack of availability for this type of property. The Directors of 1 Level Ltd have developed New build detached properties and Commercial properties in the Rochdale and Heywood areas over the past 30 years.

We wondered why new build bungalows couldn’t be constructed with wider doors in place of the standard width doors, then to have level thresholds installed instead of steps or ramps, have internal rooms with the door locations fixed in positions that were suitable for wheelchair access if required. This seemed logical so that the properties could be used by wheelchairs as well as able bodied persons.

In addition to building the properties fitted with just wider doors etc, we wondered why couldn’t they be fitted with a full range of energy saving features from day one rather than some half measure and having Accessibility and Very low utility bills through energy efficiency as a standard feature.  We couldn’t seem to find many (or any?) properties like this available, especially bungalows of just 77m2 - 90m2?

The further we researched wheelchair access housing requirements, the more it opened a whole new world of thinking for us about house design and developments. It quickly became apparent how difficult, frustrating and depressing it must be for wheelchair users living in unsuitable homes being unable to find anything near suitable in the UK housing market.

We felt that accessibility can be an integral part of the house design where it can make a big difference to the ease of use and quality of living for the people within the property, especially if they are less mobile and restricted to wheelchair use without losing any ambience or design flair.      ​​

So, here we are, with our pilot scheme after some research about accessible homes, reading numerous articles/blogs of how an accessible home can improve someone’s life dramatically.

We therefore decided to build not just bungalows but fully accessible bungalows to comply with M4(3) and hoped we have ticked enough boxes to suit most wheelchair user requirements and hopefully obtaining your approval for the two bungalow models we have available.

All properties will come with a 10 year Building Structural Warranty and all the nice things inside (plus a lot more) that many prestigious builders offer on their show sites. This isn't a compromise on the quality of interior or exterior features or finishes for the sake of including accessibility within the houses - the homes are for enjoyment on the same level for everyone (1 Level for all).

We realise that there are many different disabilities and one of the homes may require more specific features and layouts to create a more bespoke and suitable new build property for individual needs.
